Conversation with Eleanor Catton
Eleanor Catton, born in Canada in 1985 and raised in New Zealand, is a highly talented young writer who has won numerous literary prizes both for her debut novel, The Rehearsal (2010), and for her second novel, The Luminaries, including the prestigious 2013 Man Booker Prize.
The Luminaries is set in the 19th century, on the Wild West coast of Southern New Zealand during the time of gold rush. Hugely ambitious in its scope, this addictive novel is full of narrative, linguistic and psychological pleasures. Written in pitch-perfect historical register, it is also a ghost story, and a gripping mystery. The Luminaries confirms that its author is one of the brightest stars in the international writing firmament.
